White Plains High School is proud to celebrate students who earned academic honors through the College Board National Recognition Program, available through BigFuture. This year, WPHS students received 71 awards, the largest number in school history, as part of a record-setting year in which more than 300,000 students nationwide earned recognition. Awardees are among the highest-achieving students in their communities. The program helps colleges and scholarship organizations identify accomplished students, including those whose achievements might otherwise receive less visibility in the recruitment process.

In one White Plains High School classroom, students assumed the roles of investigators as they discussed diagrams of crime scenes. In another, seniors stepped into the roles of characters from Aesop’s fables, delivering speeches and drawing out the moral of each story. The subjects could hardly be more different. What connects them is Syracuse University Project Advance, or SUPA, a dual-enrollment program that gives WPHS students the opportunity to experience the demands of university coursework and earn Syracuse University credits that may transfer to other institutions.

White Plains High School students heard personal stories Friday morning from a panel of educators who shared their varied experiences as Hispanics living, learning and working in the United States. The Hispanic Heritage Month panel, held in the packed Media Center, was moderated by seniors Camila Delgado and Yajaira Palacios, who posed questions about the panelists' cultural backgrounds, their experiences growing up and the ways those experiences influence their work with students today.

There was plenty of learning, music and picture-day fun happening at Ridgway School on Thursday! In Amy Pedulla’s fifth-grade class, students put their creativity to work as they wrapped up a unit on ancient civilizations by designing shields inspired by Aztec art. After researching, presenting and working in groups, students created their own designs, outlined them with glue and covered them with foil to produce an embossed effect.

White Plains High School senior Richa Patel, who took three years of American Sign Language, used her skills to help a young deaf student communicate, learn and connect with his classmates during summer camp. She was so good, in fact, that she turned the volunteer opportunity into a paid gig with the 10-year-old George Washington Elementary School student at the six-week camp held at Church Street Elementary School.

Tables packed with colorful displays, sign-up sheets and plenty of sweet treats drew hundreds of White Plains High School students to the first Club Fair of the school year on Thursday. Dozens of organizations throughout the school introduced themselves to prospective members. Students moved from table to table, chatting with club members, grabbing informational materials and sampling goodies while discovering the many ways to get involved at WPHS.

The sound of music filled the Highlands Middle School band room Wednesday morning as a group of eighth-graders practiced pieces they will perform at White Plains’ Veterans Day ceremony. Band teacher and flutist Jennifer Pyne kept the rehearsal moving briskly, correcting notes, reminding students to watch their breathing and urging them to sit tall as they brandished their flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, trombones and percussion instruments.

The Orange, White Plains High School’s student newspaper, has earned a Gold Medalist rating from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Medalist Critique Program, recognizing the work of its student journalists during the 2025-26 school year. The honor reflects the dedication of the newspaper’s 20-member after-school staff, whose students report, write and produce The Orange while continually working to strengthen the publication.

Congratulations to WPHS Junior Ailsa Patel, who qualified for the 2026 All-State orchestra! Ailsa will represent WPHS as a violist at the NYSSMA All-State music conference in Rochester this December, surrounded by the top-scoring high school musicians from all over New York State. 

At Eastview Middle School, a year and a half of exhaustive planning and intricate scheduling has culminated in a new approach designed to make additional academic support part of every sixth-grader’s instructional day. The school’s WIN, or “What I Need,” program builds a dedicated Multi-Tiered System of Support block directly into the master schedule for every student, creating time for enrichment and reinforcement while also allowing students who need additional help to receive targeted Tier 2 or more intensive Tier 3 interventions.

Hundreds of dads, father figures and other special adults started the school day with their children Thursday morning as White Plains schools celebrated Dads and Special Adults Take Your Child to School Day with a strong show of family and community support. At Mamaroneck Avenue School, dads and dad figures lined up with their children near the school entrance to pose for photographs in front of a MAS backdrop before heading to the playground and field for some quality time together.

White Plains High School seniors Cristina Damato and Nizar Hammami have been named Semifinalists in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program, placing them among fewer than 1% of U.S. high school seniors to earn the distinction. More than 1.2 million students from about 20,000 high schools entered the 2027 competition by taking the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). More than 16,000 were selected as Semifinalists nationwide.

Twenty-five years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, 16 White Plains City School District students stood beside a memorial Friday morning to help a community honor six of its own and nearly 3,000 others whose lives were taken that day. The White Plains High School and Highlands Middle School students – accompanied by teachers Emory Davis, Paul Davis and Michael Sanchez – joined city officials, first responders, clergy members, families and community members at Liberty Park for the city’s 25th Anniversary September 11 Remembrance Ceremony.

Students across the White Plains City School District streamed into schools on Wednesday morning with a mix of excitement, anticipation and a few butterflies to kick off the 2026-27 academic year. Teachers and staff greeted the students with hugs and smiles, parents squeezed in a few final photographs and school leaders stood ready to welcome thousands of young Tigers back after the long summer break.

Two White Plains High School students are bringing a new opportunity to classmates interested in business, finance, marketing and entrepreneurship with the launch of the school’s first DECA chapter this fall. Judah Zev Goldman and Amir Melibaev are the founders and co-presidents of the chapter, which will give students hands-on experience tackling real-world business challenges while developing leadership, communication and problem-solving skills.

White Plains City School District Superintendent Dr. Joseph Ricca opened the new academic year with a spirit of excitement, energy and pride on Tuesday morning as he delivered his annual welcome-back address to faculty and staff. Dr. Ricca highlighted student accomplishments, innovative programs and academic growth during his almost hourlong address in the White Plains High School auditorium, where he challenged the crowd to build on the district’s success for the 2026-27 academic year. His theme, “Building on the Past, Shaping the Future,” reflected both pride in what White Plains schools accomplished over the past year and a determination to continue forging ahead for the young Tigers.

Five White Plains High School students marked an important educational milestone Monday evening as the district celebrated its Summer Graduation Ceremony. Two of the graduates -- Axel Tapia and Jessica Tapia Salustio -- attended the ceremony with family members, teachers, administrators and district leaders. The other three – Alje Burton, Alexis DeJesus and Brandon Tamayo Zuniga – could not make it. Summer School Principal Sara Hall congratulated the graduates for persevering through high school and completing the work necessary to earn their diplomas.

Jessica Graves is bringing a philosophy built around listening, responsiveness and building strong relationships with employees to her new role as Director of Human Resources for the White Plains City School District. Ms. Graves comes to White Plains from the Mount Vernon City School District, where she most recently served as Associate Superintendent for Human Resources. She said White Plains’ reputation, diversity and opportunities for students all attracted her to the position, as did the professionalism of its staff and the district’s investment in its schools.
