Two White Plains High School students are stepping into statewide leadership roles after being inducted as 2026 New York State My Brother’s Keeper Fellows during a ceremony in Albany.

Jerb Brice and Mateo E. Pognon were welcomed May 21 into the fellowship program, which recognizes rising seniors who have demonstrated leadership, service and a commitment to making a positive impact.

“Both students are incredibly excited and honored to take on this leadership role, representing the strength, talent and promise of the White Plains community,”  said Monique Adams, a house administrator at WPHS.

The New York State My Brother’s Keeper initiative, known as NYSMBK, was established to address persistent opportunity gaps facing boys and young men of color through partnerships focused on improving outcomes both inside and outside the classroom.

As Fellows, Jerb and Mateo will gain access to statewide and national networks of educational and community leaders while participating in leadership conferences, skill-building workshops and peer mentorship opportunities.

They also will develop and implement service projects within the district aimed at giving back to their peers and community.

State Education Commissioner Betty A. Rosa praised the newly inducted Fellows and the impact of the initiative.

“The My Brother’s Keeper initiative reflects our unwavering commitment to ensuring every New York State student is supported and empowered to succeed,” Commissioner Rosa said. “Each of the newly inducted Fellows have already made meaningful contributions in their schools and communities, demonstrating an aptitude for leadership and a deep sense of purpose.”

She added that the program equips students “to become the next generation of changemakers in their communities and across the state.”

Ms. Adams said that the “induction represents not only a personal achievement for Mateo and Jerb, but it is also a proud milestone for the entire White Plains community as we continue to work toward fostering equity, excellence and limitless opportunity for all of our students.”
