The Solar Eclipse 

Monday, April 8, 2024

Dear WPCSD Families & Staff,

As you know, there is a great deal of excitement surrounding the total solar eclipse which will take place this coming Monday, April 8, 2024.

School districts across the country are approaching this cosmic event in different ways. In the White Plains City School District, we will operate on a regular school schedule, including athletics and extracurricular activities. Of course, we will be sure to incorporate learning opportunities, and discussions, focused on the eclipse all throughout the day. A somewhat rare phenomenon, a solar eclipse is when the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, partially or completely obscuring the Sun’s light. In White Plains, the moon will cover about 90.8 percent of the sun at the peak of the eclipse. According to a NASA map that is searchable by ZIP code, the event will begin at approximately 2:11 p.m., peak at 3:26 p.m. and conclude at 4:36 p.m.

During the entire eclipse, no one should look directly at the sun without protective eyewear specialized for solar viewing in order to prevent possible permanent eye damage. In the WPCSD, all students and staff will have access to American Astronomical Society approved and certified solar eclipse viewing glasses for anyone wishing to view the event. We will also reinforce safe viewing practices and we know you will be doing the same at home.

As always, we encourage you to discuss the solar eclipse with your children at home. By working together and following precautions, we hope that all community members enjoy this unique and enriching experience.

PTA Nominations for 2024/2025 School Year

WE ARE LOOKING FOR INDIVIDUALS WHO WANT TO BE AN ACTIVE PART OF OUR PTA FOR THE 2024/2025 SCHOOL YEAR! 

Open Executive Board Positions for Election 

President or Two Co-Presidents: (2-year term)

Oversee an outstanding executive team as they manage their various functions of WPHS PTA (ex. Finance, Fundraising, Advocacy, Senior Award program, Educational Grant program, etc.). Hold 6 General PTA meetings and 5-6 Executive Board meetings per school year. Attend monthly WP PTA Council meetings. Responsible for proforma insurance, food permit, etc. filings, done annually via simple renewal procedure. Meet monthly with the WPHS Principal and as needed with the Director of Rochambeau.

Recording Secretary: (2-year term)

Record all business transacted at meetings of the association and its executive board.  Present the minutes for approval at the next meeting.  Has on hand for reference at each meeting a copy of the: Approved bylaws and procedures (standing rules), Agenda, Minutes of previous meetings, including the treasurer’s reports, list of unfinished business, list of committees, chairmen and members, etc.  In consultation with and at the request of the president, assists in the preparation of a meeting agenda. Reads and/or distributes printed copies of the minutes of any previous meeting for approval.  Counts a vote when requested by the presiding officer.

Sunday,  April 14, 2024 

at White Plains High School

On April 14, 2024 The Tri-State Engineering EXPO will host its 20th annual Engineering EXPO event that aims to inspire young people to pursue an education and career in engineering. The goal of the event is to inform and recruit the next generation of innovators through interactive displays, educational discussion panels, robotics competitions and more!

The event will take place at White Plains High School in Westchester County, New York from 11:00am to 3:30pm.

Rochambeau Art Display

Talented students from Rochambeau have artwork on display at Cafe Pamplemousse in White Plains. Special thanks to the owners, Lydia and Gary Kris, for showcasing their artwork. We greatly appreciate our art teacher, Ms. Gasior, for the work she does with our students.

Homework Center:

Open to any student who would like a quiet place to stay after school to complete assignments

Days: Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays

Drop-in program. Registration not required. Please spread the word!!! 

 

Extended Day:

Academic support in classes that culminate in a Regents Exam

Days: Tuesdays and Thursdays

  PROGRAMS THROUGH THE WHITE PLAINS YOUTH BUREAU

The Youth Employment Service office AT WPHS in H-cafeteria is open.  Hours are Monday-Friday 9-3pm.  Students can stop in and see Janet Spencer for p/t job opportunities, work permit applications and community service information.

El Eclipse Solar Total

Estimadas familias y personal del WPCSD,

Como usted sabe, hay mucha emoción en torno al eclipse solar total que tendrá lugar el próximo lunes 8 de abril de 2024.

Los distritos escolares de todo el país abordan este evento cósmico de diferentes maneras. En el distrito escolar de la ciudad de White Plains, operaremos en un horario escolar regular, incluyendo deportes y actividades extracurriculares. Por supuesto, nos aseguraremos de incorporar oportunidades de aprendizaje y debates centrados en el eclipse durante todo el día. Un fenómeno algo raro, un eclipse solar es cuando la luna pasa entre la Tierra y el Sol, oscureciendo parcial o completamente la luz del Sol. En White Plains, la luna cubrirá aproximadamente el 90.8 por ciento del sol en el punto máximo del eclipse. Según un mapa de la NASA que se puede buscar por código postal, el evento comenzará aproximadamente a las 2:11 p.m. y alcanzará su punto máximo a las 3:26 p.m. y concluirá a las 4:36 p.m.
